It defines what level should be considered silence. Silence Threshold: This is used by the Voice Activation and Auto Trim Silence from End of Recording features. If you have a low Silence Threshold set then you can safely leave this at 0. Recording will continue after you stop speaking for the given duration, before pausing to wait for further input. Delay Before Deactivate: This will adjust the length of the silence recorded between voice-activated recordings. This will depend on your level of background noise, the sensitivity of your microphone, and other factors. The Silence Threshold should be adjusted so that it is high enough not to start recording when only background noise is heard, and low enough to always start recording when you start speaking. The recording will pause when the level falls 4dB below the Silence Threshold.

The level that will start recording is the Silence Threshold. Voice Activated Recording: With this activated, recording will start when audio is received, such as when you speak into the microphone, and pause whenever there is silence. Automatic Recording Auto Trim Silence from End of Recording: This will remove trailing audio below the Silence Threshold (see below) from the end of recordings.

Display levels while recording is on standby: This will enable the DB level meter to show audio levels before recording starts.įor professional grade microphones recommended for use with WavePad, see WavePad Recommended Microphones.

Use overdub as default recording mode: This will change the recording mode to overdub (mix recording with current audio). Any audio over this level will be 'clipped', which means that it is distorted, losing audio quality. You should adjust your recording volume to ensure that the level never reaches 0dB during normal recording. If the level display remains black then no audio is being received. This level display will show the level of any audio picked up through that device. There is a level display below the Volume control, so you can see the effects of your volume changes. If you choose to record in stereo, then WavePad will use more than one of these channels, but you only need to select one. Some devices will list which channels they have available. If you select 'Master Volume' then you can adjust the volume directly from the Recording Options window.

If you select 'Windows Record Mixer' then a button will appear that will allow you to open the Windows Record Mixer and adjust recording levels there. Yet it is easy and intuitive to learn and use, and advanced plug-ins are available from third parties. This is where you select the device that WavePad should record from.

GarageBand is even free for iPads and iPhones, so you can record anywhere, bounce the files to iCloud, and import the files to the Mac from iCloud for final editing and mixing.įor me, GarageBand replaced the equivalent of a whole room full of pro studio gear (multi-track tape machines, pre-amps, limiters, compressors, equalizers, phasers, flangers, expanders.) that I used 35 to 45 years ago. Īudacity works on Macs and PCs, so it gets my vote, too, especially for Windows users.Īn absolutely excellent choice for audio editing and podcasting on the Macintosh is Apple's GarageBand, which comes free with every new Mac and is integrated with iMovie (also free with every new Mac) and iTunes AND iCloud. I have that turned off so it wouldn't even show the price, or I missed it. I downloaded the Kindle version after reading your post. Hi group, br We (wife and I) are writing a book on. Your comments about this program would be interesting. Do any of you have experience with the NCH Suite, specifically the photo editing program? I don't remember reading about it on UHH and I've been here for a number of years. We used Adobe CC for our editing needs but the NCH Suite was quite impressive for a free set of programs. I only "played" with it for a few minutes but it seemed to do as good of job as Photoshop Elements does.

When we downloaded the software we found it was part of more than 20 other programs call the NCH Suite and a photo editing software was one of those. We (wife and I) are writing a book on the various self-publishing types (eBook, print on demand, audio, video, etc.) We are currently working on the last chapter - audiobooks so we checked Google looking for an inexpensive or free audio editing program.
